The famous Portland Bill lighthouse was built in 1906, stands 35m high and has been keeping shipping safe along this stretch of the Dorset Coast. It is still in working order but is now fully automatic. Guided tours of the lighthouse can be arranged but these are subject to opening times and it’s just down the road.

Dorset’s Castles & Country Houses

Overlooking Portland Harbour in Dorset stands one of Henry VIII’s finest coastal forts, built in the early 1540s to protect against French and Spanish invasion. Dorset is home to some of the most historically important Castles and homes in England. English Heritage's website has a good guide to most of the attractions in Dorset but the Portland Castle is one of our favourites.
